One of Beau’s favorite things to do as Attorney General was to go into Delaware’s schools and talk to kids about online safety. Over the course of 8 years, Beau spoke in scores of schools, to over 25,000 students. The Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children proudly continues his work. By partnering with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Foundation is able to bring NCMEC’s NetSmartz® Workshop suite of programs into elementary, middle and high school’s. NetSmartz® Workshop covers everything Beau thought was important kids understand: good digital citizenship, online safety, and the dangers of cyber bullying. With presentations for elementary, middle and high schoolers, the Foundation can address these issues with age appropriate videos, games, lessons and tip sheets. Since April of 2016, the Foundation has addressed these issues with over 8,500 students and campers.
Stewards of Children® is based on Darkness to Light’s 5 Steps to Protecting Our Children™ and is brought locally into communities by a network of over 9,000 volunteer facilitators. Darkness to Light, like the Beau Biden Foundation, believes that every child has the right to grow up healthy, happy, and safe. It is guided by its vision to create a world where child sexual abuse does not exist. Darkness to Light believes that protecting children is an adult responsibility, and education is critical for prevention of child sexual abuse.
This partnership ensures effective execution of what Beau believed to be critical in eradicating child sexual abuse – education, raising awareness, sharing resources, and fostering a network of committed prevention advocates. Such a network of advocates allows communities to be better prepared to help children thrive, free from the trauma of sexual abuse.

NetSmartz
The Beau Biden Foundation proudly partners with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children® to bring NCMEC’s NetSmartz® to Delaware’s schools.
NetSmartzKids (4th and 5th grade)
NetSmartzKids introduces younger children to basic online safety and digital citizenship lessons using animated characters—Clicky, Tera, Nettie, and Webster. These resources teach children how to identify online dangers and practice safer behaviors through videos, music, games, and e-books. NSTeens (6th and 7th grade)
The NSTeens are a diverse cast of eight characters who help tweens learn about issues such as cyberbullying and online privacy. These resources simplify complicated Internet safety concepts for tweens who are becoming more involved with cell phones and social media sites. Resources such as animated videos, webcomics, games, and quizzes teach tweens how to protect themselves online and encourage them to be active members of their digital communities.
Real-Life Stories (8th to 12th)
Real-Life Stories materials challenge teens to think critically about online safety and digital citizenship issues, such as cyberbullying and sexting. These resources feature stories of teens that have experienced online victimization or digital drama firsthand. The narratives teach teens to recognize risky behaviors, evaluate their online choices, and communicate with trusted adults and friends. Teen materials include videos, discussion guides, tip sheets, and presentations.
Resources for Parents and Teachers
The Foundation’s presentation for parents and educators addresses the same issues – good digital citizenship, online safety, and the dangers of cyber bullying. It was created to help adults understand what children do online and address ways to foster healthy conversations about digital safety.
